“If I had not come here to learn, I would probably still be shy and afraid to speak with people.”
These simple but powerful words from Ms. HONG Thavry, a member of the Outstanding Young Leader (OYL) program, reflect a remarkable journey of personal transformation—from shyness and hesitation to confidence, communication, and courage.
Before joining OYL, Thavry described herself as an extremely shy person. She rarely felt comfortable speaking with others, especially people she did not know. Communication and social interaction were among the greatest challenges she faced.
But she also understood that these were not weaknesses she wanted to carry into her future.
“My name is Thavry, and I am a member of the Outstanding Young Leader program,” she shared. “I decided to join because I saw that this was a very valuable program that could help me improve the areas where I was lacking, especially my shyness.”
For Thavry, the need to develop communication skills was particularly important because her parents are involved in business. She recognized that being able to communicate confidently with customers, guests, colleagues, and new people would become an essential skill for her future.
She explained:
“Before joining the program, I was really shy. I did not dare to speak with people, and I did not enjoy interacting with others. My parents are businesspeople, so they need their children to know how to communicate well with customers and different people.”
Without taking action, she realized that nothing would change.
“If I had not come here to study, I would probably still be shy and would still be afraid to talk with anyone.”
But after participating in the OYL training, Thavry began to see meaningful changes in herself.
She became more comfortable interacting with others, communicating with guests, approaching unfamiliar people, expressing herself, and building relationships.
“Since I started learning here, I can say that I have improved greatly. I can interact with guests, communicate with other people, and even speak confidently with people I have never met before. I can truly see my own progress.”
Confidence Is Built, Not Born
Thavry’s story carries an important message for every young person:
Confidence does not always appear naturally. It can be developed through learning, practice, experience, and the courage to step outside your comfort zone.
A child who is shy today can become a confident communicator tomorrow.
A young person who is afraid to speak today can become a leader capable of inspiring others in the future.
